Art Curriculum Intent
At Westminster Primary School, art plays a crucial role in our curriculum, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and self-expression. Through art, our pupils explore diverse perspectives and understand the world around them, developing cultural literacy and a deeper connection to their community. Art allows pupils to communicate their ideas visually, contributing to their overall development and preparing them for future learning.
Our aim is to inspire a lifelong appreciation for art in all pupils. We strive to develop confident, curious, and resilient individuals who pursue excellence in their creative endeavours. We believe that art is not only a means of self-expression but also a vital tool for developing problem-solving skills, enhancing creativity, and fostering an understanding of the world’s cultural diversity.
The art curriculum at Westminster Primary School is designed to be inclusive and accessible to all pupils, regardless of their background or learning needs. By offering a variety of artistic mediums and techniques, we ensure that each pupil can discover their unique path to success in art. Engagement is fostered through hands-on, experiential learning, where pupils actively participate in creating, analysing, and discussing art. Lessons are made relevant and engaging by connecting them to real-world experiences, contemporary issues and artists of the present and past.
Throughout their time at Westminster Primary, pupils will explore key knowledge areas and will develop essential skills including creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and their fine motor skills. The curriculum is structured to build on these skills each year, starting with foundational techniques and progressing to more complex, independent projects, ensuring a deep and continuous learning experience.
We prepare pupils for future learning by building a strong foundation in visual literacy and critical thinking. The art curriculum opens pathways to further education in art, design, and related fields, as well as careers in the creative industries. Moreover, pupils acquire transferable skills such as creativity, innovation, resilience, and effective communication, which are valuable across subjects and for their future career ambitions.
