Music Curriculum Intent Statement

At Westminster Primary School our music curriculum plays a vital role in enhancing pupils’ creativity, emotional expression, and cultural understanding. We aim to develop a lifelong appreciation of music by engaging pupils in a diverse range of musical experiences, from listening and performing to composing and improvising. Our vision is for every pupil to build confidence in their musical abilities, explore various styles and traditions, and recognise music as a universal language that connects people across cultures. Music education is not just about creating musicians; it’s about fostering skills like concentration, teamwork, and self-expression that are valuable in all aspects of life.

We are committed to making music accessible to all pupils, regardless of their background or ability. Our inclusive approach ensures that every child can actively participate in music-making through singing, playing instruments, and using digital tools. We use engaging, hands-on teaching methods that make learning enjoyable and dynamic, allowing pupils to connect with music in a meaningful way. Our curriculum is designed to ensure equity, providing all pupils with equal access to musical opportunities, resources, and experiences that enrich their educational journey.

Our music curriculum is structured to develop substantive and disciplinary knowledge progressively, from early years to year 6. Pupils explore a broad range of musical genres and learn all about the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations. As they progress, they develop critical listening skills, perform individually and in groups, and create their own compositions. Assessment is ongoing and formative, with a focus on observation and feedback that guides teaching and supports pupil growth. Performance opportunities allow pupils to demonstrate their learning and build confidence in a supportive environment.

Beyond the classroom, we offer enriching opportunities such as choir, instrumental lessons, ensembles, and live performances at prestigious venues. We emphasise cultural awareness by exposing pupils to music from different times and places, helping them appreciate the rich diversity of musical traditions, from medieval and baroque to modern 20th and 21st-century classics. Our music curriculum not only prepares pupils for future learning but also equips them with transferable skills like creativity, problem-solving, and perseverance, laying a strong foundation for success in all areas of their education and beyond.
